Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Microwave Distribution System.

Edward Nealon

Question:

66 Mr. Nealon asked the Minister for Communications the studies or research which have been undertaken by or on behalf of his Department into the health implications of the MMDS service; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I refer the Deputy to replies to similar previous questions, particularly Question No. 9, on 1 June 1988, columns 992 to 993, volume 381 of the Official Report for that day and Question No. 28 on 27 February 1990, Columns 556 to 557, volume 396 of the Official Report for that day. The World Health Organisation conducted a task group meeting as recently as last October at which the 1988 IRPA standard, adopted by my Department was, in effect, reaffirmed.

My Department have carried out measurements on the actual signal levels emanating from the MMDS transmitter in County Galway. These measurements showed that the maximum level to which people would be exposed is 43,000 times less than the maximum level laid down in the IRPA standard.
