Vol. 403 No. 9

Written Answers. - Education of Mentally Handicapped Children.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

85 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Education if she has completed her assessment of the pilot scheme for the peripatetic teacher to facilitate the integration of mentally handicapped children; if she will be in a position to financially support and provide for the six pilot schemes when their current voluntary funding ends in 1991 with specific reference to the Dublin northside scheme which is to end in March 1991; if she intends to extend the scheme on a nationwide basis in parallel with similar schemes for the deaf and visually impaired; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

As the Deputy will be aware, I have just recently received the report of the primary education review body. I intend to study this report, including its observations and recommendations on special education, before deciding on the precise measures to be taken in the special education area.
