Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Disadvantaged Areas Scheme.

Austin Deasy

Question:

105 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food the reason all of the 2.5 per cent of our national territory, which is liable for inclusion in the disadvantaged areas scheme under Article 3.5 has not been included, in view of the serious damage caused by flooding; and if he will carry out a national survey to ensure that this is done.

Article 3.5 covers small areas with specific handicaps which may be considered for classification on the grounds of supporting the continuation of farming, preserving the tourist potential and protecting the coastline. As most coastal areas and areas subject to flooding have already been classified as disadvantaged, only those vulnerable coastal areas which were not so classified and were suffering from the specific hardship of coastal erosion and/or flooding, were submitted to the EC.
