Vol. 404 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime in Limerick.

Michael Finucane

Question:

142 Mr. Finucane asked the Minister for Justice the plans he has for further surveillance in the Limerick city area, because of the increased crime displacement, where city criminals are now carrying out robberies throughout the county and causing a lot of concern.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the level of recorded crime in Limerick Division as a whole, including the city, decreased by about 15 per cent in 1988, that that decrease was maintained in 1989 and that the preliminary indications are that there will be a further decrease this year. I am also informed that, while there was some increase in the level of recorded crime in Limerick county in 1989, the preliminary indications are that this trend will be reversed in 1990.

The Garda authorities have assured me that they continually monitor the crime situation throughout Limerick, as elsewhere, and that they will continue to assess and adapt their strategies as necessary to deal with changing crime patterns.
