Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Widening of County Wexford Bridge.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

312 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for the Environment if funds will be made available to Wexford County Council to widen the bridge at Killincooley, Kilmuckridge, Gorey, County Wexford in view of the narrowness of the carriageway and the sad history of accidents including the death of two young persons there in August, 1989; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

As the bridge in question is located on a non-national road, primary responsibility for assessing possible measures to improve safety there, and for implementing such measures, rests with the local authority concerned, in this case Wexford County Council. The cost involved falls to be financed from local authority resources supplemented by the discretionary grants provided by my Department for works on non-national roads. In the case of Wexford County Council, these grants totalled £2.119 million in 1990. The discretionary grants for 1991 will be notified to local authorities early next month.
