Vol. 404 No. 4

Written Answers. - Income Tax Law relating to Marriage.

Nuala Fennell

Question:

130 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to the anomalous situation in income tax policy which discriminates against couples who are living together in long term relationships without marriage as against those couples who are married; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

There are no special tax provisions for unmarried couples living together as man and wife. This tax treatment reflects the general law relating to marriage.
