Question:

66 Mr. Cosgrave asked the Minister for Justice the total spent on criminal legal aid to barristers and solicitors for each of the last six years.

The cost of the criminal legal aid scheme for each of the last six years, represented by payments made to solicitors and barristers in respect of fees, expenses or disbursements, is as follows: 1985, £2,172,395; 1986, £2,018,192; 1987, £2,397,155; 1988, £2,776,770; 1989, £2,788,346; 1990, £2,692,000 (Provisional).

The above figures include VAT and, since 10 June 1987, withholding tax.
