Vol. 404 No. 6

Written Answers. - Special Pay Awards.

Richard Bruton

Question:

180 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health the level of special pay awards which have been agreed or are pending in respect of staff in the health service, indicating in respect of each category of worker (a) the percentage increase awarded or recommended, (b) the phasing agreed for the payment, and (c) the estimated cost of the payment to public authority budgets.

Special pay awards to health staffs, due under clause 3.4 of the elaboration of clause 3 of the 1987 agreement on pay in the public service, which have been agreed for implementation are as follows:

Percentage Increase

Estimated Full Year Cost

Grade

%

£ million

Nurses

10

42.0

Para medical grades (excluding social workers)

10

5.5

Director of community care MOH Senior area medical officer and area medical officer

Re-imbursement of Medical Defence Fees

0.3

In each of the cases above, implementation will be on a phased basis, as follows: 40 per cent from 1 May 1991; 30 per cent from 1 March 1991; 30 per cent from 1 September 1992.
In addition to the above, there are awards pending in the case of social workers, non-consultant hospital doctors and hospital consultants. I do not intend to make any further comment to avoid prejudicing the outcome in these cases.
