Question:

206 Mr. J. Higgins asked the Minister for Education (1) the number of full-time students in third level colleges, (2) the number of students currently attending third level colleges who qualify for higher education grants, (3) the number of students currently attending third level colleges who qualify for vocational education committee grants and (4) the number of students currently attending third level colleges who qualify for ESF grants.

The information requested by the Deputy is as follows:

(1) The number of full time students in third level colleges for 1989-90 is 61,572.
(2) It is understood from the local authorities who administer the higher education grants scheme that 13,438 students currently attending third level colleges qualify for assistance from that scheme.
(3) The number of students who qualify for vocational education scholarships is 1,367.
(4) The most up-to-date figures for students currently attending third level colleges who qualify for ESF grants is 20,847.
