Vol. 404 No. 8

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case: (1) Deputy Bill Cotter — the proposed extension in the number of free legal aid centres in the context of the State of the existing service; (2) Deputy John V. Farrelly — if the Minister for Industry and Commerce had any negotiations with a replacement company for Zenith Limited in Kells, County Meath, where 266 jobs have been lost; (3) Deputy Pat Rabbitte — the reported decision that the Department of Health are not to proceed with the building of the Tallaght Regional Hospital in 1991; (4) Deputy Eamon Gilmore — the dispute in RTE that has led to the indefinite suspension of RTE orchestras; (5) Deputy Pat McCartan — the restructuring plan announced yesterday by An Post, involving the shedding of 1,500 jobs, the closure of more than 500 sub-post offices and increases in postal charges; the implications of these proposals for employment and for the impact of the proposed sub-post office closures on communities, especially in rural Ireland; (6) Deputy Bernard Allen — the circumstances and consequences of the cement blowout at the Iarnród Éireann site at Lower Glanmire Road, Cork, on 6 February 1991, and if a full independent departmental investigation will be carried out into this most serious of a number of accidents; (7) Deputy John Browne (Carlow-Kilkenny)— the subject matter of Question No. 26 of 28 November 1990 regarding car lamps which cannot be dimmed properly and are a danger on the road at night time; and (8) Deputy Roger Garland — the serious situation regarding the proposed 1,500 redundancies in An Post and its effect on the already very high unemployment figures; and in particular, its impact in rural areas.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by the following Deputies: (1) Deputy Eamon Gilmore, (2) Deputy John Browne and (3) Deputy Bernard Allen.

On a point of order, has the Chair been given notice by the Minister for Justice whether a statement will be made on the unfortunate mortar attack on Downing Street which caused serious injuries and which could have serious consequences for terrorism on this island?

I do not have any knowledge——

Is the Minister making a statement?

——of the matter to which the Deputy refers.

Would it be possible to find out if a statement will be made?

It is not a matter for the Chair, Deputy.
