Written Answers. - Provision of Paediatric Services.

Phil Hogan

Question:

17 Mr. Hogan asked the Minister for Health his views on whether there is a need for a consultant paediatric service at St. Lukes Hospital, Kilkenny; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The provision of paediatric services in the South Eastern Health Board area is a matter for the board in the first instance. The planned development for St. Luke's Hospital, Kilkenny makes provisions for, inter alia, a 16 bed paediatric unit. Building will commence on this project as soon as resources permit.

The Deputy may be aware that I have recently approved the appointment of a consultant paediatrician with appropriate support staff at Wexford General Hospital.

Because of the provision of a paediatric service at Wexford General Hospital it will be necessary for the South Eastern Health Board to examine their arrangement for the provision of paediatric services within the region taking into account any effects which the opening of the Wexford service will have on the Waterford Regional paediatric unit at Ardkeen and how the service provided to Kilkenny and Clonmel might consequently be further developed.
