Vol. 404 No. 8

Written Answers. - Health Board Bed Costs.

John V. Farrelly

Question:

53 Mr. Farrelly asked the Minister for Health (a) the bed occupancy on an annual basis for each of the health boards since 1987 in all hospitals and (b) the annual cost per bed in each of the board areas; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The information requested by the Deputy in relation to bed occupancy and annual cost per bed is set out in the schedule to be circulated in the Official Report. It is stressed that bed costs vary greatly depending on the type of hospital; an acute hospital with regional specialties, for example, will have far higher bed costs than a district hospital. Any crude comparison of the figures shown in the table would therefore be very misleading. For example, the table shows the highest annual cost per bed to be in the North Eastern Health Board; but this reflects the fact that there are no district hospitals in that board's area.
