Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Cork City Student Accommodation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

208 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education if her attention has been drawn to the difficulties being experienced by students in obtaining accommodation close to University College, Cork and the Regional Technical College, Cork; if she has considered the possibility of developing purpose built student accommodation on adjoining lands; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

My attention has not been specifically drawn to this problem but I am aware students generally may experience difficulties in finding accommodation as close as they would wish to their respective colleges.

I am pleased that a number of third level colleges have initiated self-financing student accommodation developments with the private sector. As a result of initiatives by UCC in two separate developments, a total of about 700 student accommodation places are being provided, one on the college site and the other on a completely private basis.
