Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Downs-Syndrome Children.

Nuala Fennell

Question:

237 Mrs. Fennell asked the Minister for Education the number of children with Downs-syndrome who were educated in mainstream national schools in 1989-90; and the plans she has to increase the numbers.

I have already agreed to the establishment of a special committee to report on the integration of pupils with special needs into the education system as recommended in the report of the Primary Education Review Body.

The policy of my Department is one of integration of children with handicaps where this is possible.

I was very pleased as President of the EC Council of Ministers during the Irish Presidency to have this policy of integration adopted by my colleagues at our meeting of 31 May 1990.
