Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Third Level Education Allocation.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

69 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Education (1) the increase in the allocation which was received by the regional technical college sector in each of the last three years and the number of additional places which were created as a result; (2) the increase in allocation which was received by the university sector in the same period and the number of additional places which were created as a result; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The total allocation — capital and current — for the VEC third level college and university sector for the years 1988 to 1990 together with the number of full-time students in each of the sectors for the academic years 1987-88 to 1989-90 are set out in the following tables.

Variations in the level of grant allocation do not co-relate directly with proportionate variations in the student numbers due, for instance, to the need to provide for pay increases and inflation on the current side, replacement and renewal of existing accommodation on the capital side, the time lag between the initiation of capital projects and the full achievement of increased student capacity, and overall efficiency gains within the sectors.

Grants to Higher Education Authority.
