Vol. 404 No. 9

Written Answers. - Disposal of Used Army Vehicles.

Paul Bradford

Question:

71 Mr. Bradford asked the Minister for Defence the reason the policy of disposing of used Army land rovers by public auction was changed during 1988-89 when the vehicles in question were sent directly for scrapping; and if there is any intention of returning to the policy of auctioning these used vehicles.

Obsolete and unservicable vehicles were disposed of by public auction prior to 1988. A contract was placed in October 1988 for the sale as scrap metal of disused military vehicles from which servicable components had been salvaged for further use. This arrangement was recommended by the military authorities in the interests of security and provided a more cost effective method of disposal.

The question of disposing of disused military vehicles by auction in the future will be kept under review.
