Vol. 405 No. 1

Written Answers. - Tourism Growth.

John Connor

Question:

38 Mr. Connor asked the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications if he will report on the performance in each of the tourism regions in relation to meeting the targets for growth at the end of the 1990 season, as included in the Government policy to double tourist numbers by the end of 1993.

The Central Statistics Office — CSO — recently published visitor statistics for 1990 and these show that visitor numbers last year reached almost 3.1 million, leaving the sector on line with Government targets which are as follows:

Target

Achieved

1988

2.345 million

2.345 million

1989

2.697 million

2.732 million

1990

3.102 million

3.069 million

The CSO do not produce a regional breakdown of these statistics. However, Bord Fáilte prepare estimates of visits made to regions and revenue, but those for 1990 will not be available until later this year.
