Vol. 405 No. 3

Written Answers. - Tax Audits.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

74 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Finance if any target figure has been set for the number of tax returns, from the self-employed, which will be audited by the Revenue Commissioners this year and in 1992; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The audit programme referred to by the Deputy is now well under way with the staff devoted to it being increased progressively. However, the programme has not been in existence long enough to enable a judgment to be made as to the appropriate level of audits. Ultimately the level will be such as to ensure compliance and the confidence of taxpayers in the system. The present phase of the audit programme will provide valuable information about noncompliance which will form the basis of future decisions on audit levels.
