Vol. 405 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Emigration Statistics.

Austin Deasy

Question:

8 Mr. Deasy asked the Taoiseach the estimated number of citizens of the State who have emigrated in the last ten years.

In the absence of comprehensive documentary or other administrative procedures relating to the movement of persons into and out of the State, migration estimates are made annually using current population estimates and data on births and deaths. These migration estimates are for the net balance between inward and outward flows in the 12 month period to mid-April each year.

In the ten year period to mid-April 1990 it is estimated that outward migration exceeded inward migration by about 206,000 persons.

We now move to questions nominated for priority, for which 15 minutes only is provided under the Standing Orders of this House.
