Vol. 405 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Clogher Head (Louth) Harbour.

Michael Bell

Question:

16 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Marine if his Department have decided to allocate finance to the development of Clogher Head Harbour, County Louth, from the Operational Programme for Rural Development as announced on 20 December 1990; if he will outline the portion of the £15 million to be provided for infrastructural improvements at selected harbours which will apply to Clogher Head; if he will give details of the consultations his Department have had with Louth County Council or other Government Departments regarding this matter; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

A sum of £2 million has been proposed in my Department's fishery harbour development programme for works at Clogher Head, County Louth. This programme takes full advantage of the available EC Structural Fund aid under the operational programme for rural development and reflects the priority projects over the next few years.

My Department's engineers are at present considering the nature and extent of the development to be undertaken and is having ongoing consultation with Louth County Council about the proposed work at Clogher Head.

I welcome the Minister's statement that this money will be provided. In view of the importance of this harbour — the Minister knows this better than anyone having seen the harbour at first hand recently — can he indicate when he expects the work to get under way?

As I indicated in my reply, my engineers are working on this development as of now and I have asked them to speed it up.
