Vol. 405 No. 4

Written Answers. - County Kerry Coastal Erosion.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

24 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for the Marine if he will make special funds available to prevent further coastal erosion at Ballybunion Golf Club, County Kerry.

I am aware of the international reputation of Ballybunion Golf Course as a sporting amenity and of its importance to the Ballybunion region. I am also aware that the Ballybunion coastline has suffered over the years from a coastal erosion problem, which affects the golf course.

Unfortunately, the history of beach removals in the area has been a significant contributory factor to erosion at Ballybunion and my Department have been making efforts to satisfactorily resolve this problem.

As regards funds for coastal erosion, the amount available to me is limited and my Department have no proposals to make funding available to undertake protection works at Ballybunion Golf Club.
On the question of storm damage, I do not have a report from Kerry County Council on the extent of damage sustained to the Kerry coastline following recent storms. While I understand that the golf course in Ballybunion was affected, there are no funds available to my Department to assist with storm damage repairs.
