Vol. 405 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sale of Surplus Butter.

Michael Bell

Question:

13 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if his attention has been drawn to the details of the decision to sell to the Soviet Union over 200,000 tonnes of surplus butter; the effect this will have on Irish intervention stocks; the price per pound at which this butter will be sold to the Soviet Union; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Under a derogation from GATT minimum prices which was agreed at an International Dairy Arrangement meeting in December 1990, the supply of 200,000 tonnes of Community butter to the USSR has been agreed in principle. Arrangements for the sale, however, have not yet been finalised.
