Vol. 405 No. 7

Request to Move Adjournment of Dáil under Standing Order 30.

Before we come to the Order of Business I have received a notice of motion under Standing Order 30 from Deputy Jim O'Keeffe. I now call on Deputy Jim O'Keeffe to state the matter of which he has given notice.

I move the Adjournment of the Dáil pursuant to Standing Order 30 on a specific and important matter of public interest requiring urgent consideration. The matter in question is the need for the Dáil: 1. To congratulate the people of Kuwait on the liberation of their country and to call on Iraq to formally withdraw all claims of any kind to the territory of Kuwait; 2. To confirm that Iraq must comply fully and unconditionally with all the relevant resolutions of the United Nations Security Council arising from its invasion of Kuwait; 3. To demand that Saddam Hussein now confirm his willingness to accept and comply with such Resolutions of the United Nations.

Having considered the matter fully I do not consider it one contemplated by Standing Order 30 and, therefore, I cannot grant leave to move the motion.

I accept your ruling, a Cheann Comhairle. May I ask that the Taoiseach would convey to the people of Kuwait through their authorities the congratulations of the House, in which I am sure all would wish to join, on the liberation of their country?

That must be the end of the matter. We are proceeding with the Order of Business.
