Written Answers. - Redundancy Statistics.

Séamus Pattison

Question:

31 Mr. Pattison asked the Minister for Labour the number of notified redundancies to his Department for the month of December for the years 1987 to 1990.

The numbers of proposed redundancies notified to my Department under the Redundancy Payments Act, for the month of December for the years in question were as follows: 1987, 1,896; 1988, 1,537; 1989, 777 and 1990, 913.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

33 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Labour the total number of redundancies reported to his Department for the full year of 1990; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The number of proposed redundancies notified to my Department under the terms of the Redundancy Payments Acts in 1990 was 13,292. This figure is the lowest annual total since 1979 and continues the low level of redundancy notifications in the previous years. The 1989 figure of 13,395 in itself represented a striking drop of 42 per cent on the 1988 total of 23,037.
