Vol. 405 No. 8

Written Answers. - Conductive Education.

Joe Sherlock

Question:

58 Mr. Sherlock asked the Minister for Health if he has made any study of the system of conductive education for children with cerebral palsy developed in Hungary; and if he intends to take any steps, in conjunction with the Minister for Education, to establish such an educational system here.

The system of conductive education which was developed by the Peto Institute in Hungary has been carefully examined by professional staff of the voluntary organisations providing services for children with cerebral palsy who have been to Hungary to study their methods and approach. They consider that the system has some helpful approaches to offer certain children based on mobility training integrated with education. The approach, therefore, is to incorporate these aspects of the system into existing programmes rather than develop a separate conductive education system. Officials of my Department are in touch with officials of the Department of Education on this matter.
