Question:

152 Mr. Yates asked the Minister for the Environment the number of cars registered and taxed annually in each year for the last ten years; and the proportion of the population which either (a) owns a car, (b) has the use of a private motor car or (c) are totally dependent on public transport, based on the most up to date figures.

The number of private cars under current licence (taxed) as at 30 September in each year over the ten year period 1981 to 1990 is set out in the following tabular statement:
