Question:

84 Mr. D. Wallace asked the Minister for Health the percentage of gross domestic product spent on health services (1) in Ireland and (2) in each of the OECD countries for each of the years from 1987 to 1990 and the estimate in 1991; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development publishes inter-country comparisons of expenditure on health services as a percentage of GDP. These estimates take account of both public and private expenditure. Some elements of Irish health expenditure are, however, excluded from the OECD estimates on the grounds that they are not classified as health expenditure in other countries; the figures in Table 1 below are not therefore directly comparable with published Irish data. The latest year for which published information is available is 1987.
