Vol. 406 No. 2

Written Answers. - Sale of Intervention Beef.

Noel Dempsey

Question:

57 Mr. Dempsey asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he intends to extend the range of institutions eligible to receive beef from the welfare scheme of the EC No. 2848/89; if so, the institutions he intends to extend it to; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

EC Regulation 2848/89 provides that intervention agencies may sell certain products of the beef and veal sector which they are holding to non-profit-making welfare institutions. The list of eligible institutions required to be drawn up by the regulation has been established in Ireland following consultation with the Department of Health. The Department have notified all health boards, voluntary hospitals and mentally handicapped hospitals in receipt of Exchequer funding of the availability of the beef.

I have arranged for the list to be kept under review and I will consider justified additions where those are requested by specific organisations.
