Vol. 406 No. 2

Written Answers. - Wexford Route Lighting.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

68 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for the Environment if he has received communications from Wexford County Council regarding the replacement of obsolete route lighting on the N11; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that (a) Wexford County Council are in dispute with the ESB who claim that the existing system is incapable of repair and must be replaced at a cost of £70,000 and (b) the council have no funds to meet this demand; and in view of the very serious traffic hazard created by defects in the existing obsolete system if he will take steps to have this matter resolved immediately.

I am aware that replacement lanterns and lamps are no longer available for a particular type of fitting used in traffic route lighting schemes which were installed in the sixties and seventies. The matter has been the subject of correspondence from a number of local authorities, including Wexford County Council.

My Department are at present developing a renewal programme for the relevant traffic route lighting schemes on the network of national roads. I propose to finance the programme, on a phased basis, over the coming years.
