Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Six Year School Cycle.

Theresa Ahearn

Question:

133 Mrs. T. Ahearn asked the Minister for Education when the details of the six year cycle will be related to school managers; whether the six year cycle will be compulsory for all students; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The Programme for Economic and Social Progress provides for an optional six year cycle for all pupils commencing their post-primary education in 1991. The second level cycle will consist of three years at junior level and the option of a transition year before a two year senior cycle.

The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment are at present examining the structure of the senior cycle and I am awaiting their recommendations in this regard.

The situation has been outlined to managerial authorities at informal meetings with my Department.
