Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Distance Learning.

asked the Minister for Education if she has any plans to develop distance learning; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

The National Distance Education Centre was set up in 1982 and is located at Dublin City University. It was further strengthened in 1985 with the launching of the National Distance Education Council. Since 1982 approximately 7,500 students have undertaken programmes of study offered by the centre.

A bachelor of science in information technology programme was launched in 1986 and the first graduates will be conferred this year. It is also proposed to launch a programme for a degree in humanities next year. Foundation and other courses of the open universities are also made available through the centre as well as a course on information technology for accountants.
