Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Tralee Sports Centre.

Jimmy Deenihan

Question:

40 Mr. Deenihan asked the Minister for Education the reason she has refused to allocate a grant to the town of Tralee VEC to extend the sports centre at Clounalour despite the fact that £300,000 was approved by her Department for the project in March 1989.

Dick Spring

Question:

70 Mr. Spring asked the Minister for Education the reason she wishes to rescind the terms of an agreement drawn up between the Tralee VEC and Tralee UDC on 1 October 1980 for the management of Tralee sports complex.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 40 and 70 together.

A grant of £300,000 was approved in 1988 in respect of an extension to the Tralee sports complex under the Government's multi-annual capital programme funded by the national lottery.

My Department wish, however, to have the management arrangements for the complex re-examined to ensure, among other things, that it is operated on a self-financing basis an that no responsibility will lie with the VEC in respect of the operation and operating costs of the complex.

It will be necessary that the revised management structure be put in place before further proceeding with the proposed extension of the sports complex. Officials of my Department will shortly be inviting representatives of the VEC to discussions on the revised management structures.
