Vol. 406 No. 4

Written Answers. - Schools for Young Offenders.

William Cotter

Question:

65 Mr. Cotter asked the Minister for Education the number of persons in care in places of remand and assessment and in long-stay units under her Department's control at present; her views on whether the number of places is adequate; and if she will make a statement on the matter.

There were 164 young persons in care on 8 March 1991 in the four special schools for young offenders under my Department's control. Due to the pressure for accommodation for both boys and girls, arrangements are being made at present to have 44 additional places provided at Lusk, County Dublin, this coming summer. In addition, a special centre for 20 girls is to be constructed at Finglas.
