Vol. 406 No. 8

Written Answers. - Castletownbere (County Cork) Harbour.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

19 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Marine if he will outline his response to the concerns expressed by the Castletownbere people, County Cork following the coming into force of the rates order which permits harbour dues to be collected and jurisdiction to be exercised by Bantry Harbour Commission in Castletownbere outer harbour.

Berehaven Harbour, excluding Castletownbere Fishery Harbour Centre, has been under the jurisdiction of Bantry since Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners were established in 1976. Any amendment to the area of jurisdiction could only be effected by the introduction of amending legislation. The Castletownbere interests have been advised that the question of extending the limits of Castletownbere Fishery Harbour Centre will be reconsidered in the light of experience of the operations of the order. In the meantime, Bantry Bay Harbour Commissioners are statutorily empowered to charge harbour rates on fish factory ships which anchor in Berehaven Sound.
