Vol. 407 No. 1

Written Answers. - Land Registry.

Frank Crowley

Question:

211 Mr. Crowley asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider (1) decentralising or privatising the Land Registry and (2) employing additional staff to alleviate the ongoing backlog there.

My proposals for the reorganisation of the Land Registry and Registry of Deeds were indicated in my reply to Dáil Questions Nos. 24 and 69 on 5 February 1991. Those proposals include the reconstitution of the Land Registry and the Registry of Deeds as a semi-State body.

I am now studying the strategic plan for the registries which was prepared by a firm of management consultants.

The working group which I established to assist me in the preparation of the legislation necessary for the establishment of the semi-State body, and to advise me on the best methods of tackling the problems existing in the registries, is well advanced in its task.
