Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Wexford Sports Complex Funding.

Tomás MacGiolla

Question:

218 Tomás Mac Giolla asked the Minister for Education if she will confirm that a grant of £300,000 from the national lottery for the building of a sports complex has been withdrawn from Wexford Corporation; and if so, the purpose for which this money will be used.

Under a scheme approved by Government, grants are payable from the proceeds of the national lottery for the provision of local sports centres at various locations throughout the country subject to certain conditions which include the submission of satisfactory proposals on the facilities to be provided, a local contribution of 30 per cent of the construction costs and appropriate management arrangements to ensure that the centre operates on a self-financing basis.

Wexford was designated as a location in 1989. As no suitable proposals were received within the terms of the scheme despite correspondence with local interests, the offer of the grant has been withdrawn. The reallocation of the grant in question is a matter for consideration in the light of the implementation of the sports capital programme as a whole.
