Vol. 407 No. 3

Written Answers. - Funding for Poorer Regions.

Peter Barry

Question:

84 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Finance if he will ask the EC to set up a new compensation fund to boost the Community's poorer economies.

The Deputy will be aware that one of the main aims of the Community's existing structural funds is the improvement of the economies of the Community's poorer regions.

In the context of the Intergovernmental Conferences on Economic and Monetary Union and on Political Union, Ireland has tabled proposals designed to establish a framework within which the Community should deepen its existing commitment to economic and social cohesion. The intention is that this process should proceed in tandem with the integration of the Community and may involve changes to existing instruments as well as new mechanisms to promote cohesion.
