Question:3 Mr. Belton asked the Taoiseach the present position in relation to a grant allocation for Longford Museum.

I understand that the National Heritage Council have received a number of applications in respect of museum projects including one relating to a Longford Museum.
The question of whether grant assistance will be offered is entirely a matter for the council which has complete independence in deciding on the priorities for grant assistance and the amount, if any, in such a case.
The Taoiseach had the privilege last year to visit a temporary premises, the old vocational school in Longford, where the museum is now housed. The Longford Historical Society and county council have combined their efforts resulting in the old post office now being the proposed site on which much work has been carried out. Would the Taoiseach use his good offices to ensure that a grant is given for this development? The Taoiseach has always been prominent in developing heritage and museums throughout the country and we consider that different locations should be given priority for this worthwhile development.
I think the Deputy has made his point.
I am very impressed with the museum in Longford. As local museums go, it is excellent and deserves support. Of course, the Longford Historical Society are participating in the Irish genealogy project. Things are happening in that area in Longford. As I have said the question of whether they get a grant from the National Heritage Council is entirely a matter for the council but I am sure the attributes of the museum that the Deputy and I appreciate will also be appreciated by the National Heritage Council.
