Vol. 407 No. 6

Written Answers. - Forestry Development.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

52 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Energy if he has had any discussions or plans to have any with Coillte Teoranta regarding the need to ensure that forestry development is undertaken in an environmentally sensitive way, especially in areas of scenic beauty; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

While forestry development can be expected generally to enhance rather than detract from the environment I can assure the Deputy that measures have been taken to ensure that all forestry planting, by both the public and private sectors, is undertaken with due regard to the environment. Coillte Teoranta, as much as any private developer, is required to meet the standards which have been set. Furthermore, the Forestry Act, 1988, which established the company specifically provides that Coillte Teoranta have due regard to environmental and amenity consequences of its operations. The company must also under the Act consult with the Minister for Finance concerning forestry development in areas of scientific interest.

There is regular contact with the company to ensure that these requirements are fulfilled.
