Vol. 407 No. 7

Adjournment Debate Matters.

I wish to advise the House of the following matters in respect of which notice has been given to me under Standing Order 20 (3) (a) and the name of the Member in each case:

(1) Deputy Therese Ahearn — the appalling conditions which currently prevail at Ardfinan national school in south Tipperary and the urgency of the long promised extensions to the school; (2) Deputy Durkan — the subject matter of Parliamentary Questions Nos. 204 and 210 of 17 April 1991; (3) Deputy Richard Bruton — the uncertainty, dislocation and distress affecting patients attending St. Luke's and St. Anne's Hospital in Dublin due to a shortage of beds and therapeutic radiographers; (4) Deputy Deenihan — the crisis faced by many national youth organisations because of the decrease in funding by the Government resulting in the loss of 50 jobs in the youth service; (5) Deputy Leonard — the contents of the submission to the EC under the joint INTERREG programme for Northern Ireland and Ireland; (6) Deputy Howlin — the urgent need for the immediate sanctioning of an extra teacher for the CBS secondary school in Wexford town; (7) Deputy Garland — the subject matter of the reply to Question No. 140 to the Minister for Finance on 17 April 1991 wherein he advised that he did not propose to have environmental impact studies carried out in spite of considerable local opposition to both interpretive centres at Dunquinn, County Kerry, and Mullaghmore, County Clare; (8) Deputy McCartan — the imminent demolition of Howth House, Dublin 13, and the need for An Taoiseach to take action to protect and preserve this important historical an architectural building; (9) Deputy Gilmore — the delay in implementing the new housing policies which were contained in the Government's "Plan for Social Housing"; (10) Deputy Rabbitte — the reported failure of mediation efforts aimed at filling 60 residential places for mentally handicapped people at Cheeverstown House, Dublin; (11) Deputy Allen — if the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications will take steps to prevent the Bank of Ireland from posting Access credit card statements from an address in Great Britain, thereby depriving the Irish postal services of much needed revenue; (12) Deputy Hogan — the need for the Minister for Agriculture and Food to take immediate action to resolve the problems of illegal dumping of animal carcases throughout the country; (13) Deputy Tony Gregory — the inadequacy of the Department of the Environment's allocation to Dublin Corporation for their 1991 refurbishment plans for neglected corporation flat complexes in the inner city, and specifically the Minister's refusal to allow Dublin Corporation to provide washing facilities for the 140 families in St. Joseph's Mansions, Dublin 1, during 1991; (14) Deputy Owen — the issue of the importation of pedigree dogs from kennels in Wales that have been shut down by the authorities there; (15) Deputy McEllistrim — if the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications will intervene on behalf of a company (details supplied) in County Kerry and request CIE to give an order for signalling equipment to this company and (16) Deputy Ryan — the delay in proceeding with the construction of the proposed Fingal community college, Swords.

I have selected for discussion the matters raised by Deputies: Rabbitte, T. Ahearn and Howlin.

A Cheann Comhairle, could you help me in regard to an issue? I am not questioning your ruling but is there any mechanism for raising in this House something like a typhoon as an emergency? I am at a loss to know——

If the Deputy will communicate with my office she will be advised in respect of that matter.

A typhoon is surely an emergency.

I have nothing to add to what I told the Deputy.
