Vol. 407 No. 7

Written Answers. - EC Migration Commission.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

54 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if Ireland is participating in the commission for migration and services to migrants being organised by the EC Commission; if he will outline our representation on the commission; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I presume that the Deputy is referring to the initiative taken by the EC Commission in November 1990 which had as its aim the establishment of a migrants forum. The EC Commission met nongovernmental representatives of migrant communities originating outside, but now resident within, the member states of the European Community. I understand that the forum will be an EC wide body, allowing the migrant community to establish a political dialogue with European Community institutions.

I also understand that a non-Governmental organisation which represents a foreign community based in Ireland is on the preparatory committee for the forum.
