Vol. 407 No. 7

Written Answers. - Mountjoy Women's Prison.

Tony Gregory

Question:

80 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice if he has satisfied himself that conditions in the separation unit of Mountjoy Women's Prison are appropriate and are suited to the needs of two prisoners (details supplied) who are held there; if he has any plans to transfer these prisoners to a more appropriate secure unit in the interests of their rehabilitation and welfare; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The two persons concerned were committed to Mountjoy female prison under section 102 (3) of the Children Act, 1908, having been certified by the court as being of so unruly a character that they could not be detained in a place of detention provided for under the 1908 Act. One of these offenders has since been released.

Offenders in this category are housed separately from adult offenders in Mountjoy female prison in accordance with the Rules for the Government of Prisons, 1947, and in dormitory type accommodation with integral sanitation. They have access to a full range of medical, psychiatric, psychological, welfare, educational, work training and chaplaincy services. I am satisfied that the conditions are suited to their needs. There are no immediate plans for the transfer of prisoners in this category from their present location.
