Vol. 407 No. 8

Written Answers. - Foreign Births Register.

Peter Barry

Question:

25 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been drawn to the fact that members of the Friends of Ireland in the United States are concerned that the legislation in relation to the foreign births register has not been introduced; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

Peter Barry

Question:

29 Mr. Barry asked the Minister for Justice when legislation will be introduced to register those who applied in time but were not registered before 31 December 1986 on the foreign births register.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 25 and 29 together.

I am aware of the representations made by the Friends of Ireland in this regard and I understand their concerns in the matter of citizenship. However, as I have informed the House on previous occasions, I could not undertake, by way of response to a parliamentary question, to disclose what particular legislative proposals I have in mind. Any such proposals will, in the normal way, be brought before the Government, and, if approved, will be announced in the usual manner.
