Vol. 407 No. 8

Written Answers. - Outbreak of Poultry Disease.

Bernard Allen

Question:

52 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Agriculture and Food if he will make a statement on the recent outbreak of Newcastle poultry disease at Carrignavar, County Cork; the number of birds slaughtered; and if his Department will pay compensation for the losses incurred.

A total of 8,500 birds were slaughtered as a result of the recent outbreak of Newcastle disease in County Cork. Monitoring and surveillance has been carried out in a 10 km zone around the outbreak. To date this has yielded negative results and I expect to be in a position to lift the area restrictions shortly. Compensation will be paid in respect of the compulsory slaughter of the birds.
