Written Answers. - Legislation Statistics.

Patrick McCartan

Question:

64 Mr. McCartan asked the Minister for Justice if it is intended to renew section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 which is due to expire later this year; if he will give the total number of persons held under this Act since the section was introduced; the proportion of those held who were subsequently charged with offences; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

It is my intention to introduce appropriate resolutions for approval by this House and by the Seanad to enable sections 4 to 6, 8 to 10, 15, 16, 18 and 19 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 to continue in operation after 30 June 1991.

The number of persons detained under the Act in the period 1 July 1987 (the date on which the detention provisions came into operation) to 31 December 1990, which is the latest date for which figures are available, was 24,095 and the number of such persons subsequently charged with offences for which they were detained was 14,199 (59 per cent).
