Question:

195 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Health the number of acute hospital beds in hospitals run by each of the health boards in 1986 and at present.

The information requested by the Deputy is set out in the table below. In comparing the present position with that of 1986, account must be taken of activity levels, as measured by the number of patients discharged, and also of the substantial increase in the number of day-beds.

* James Connolly Memorial Hospital was a joint board hospital in 1986 and is therefore not included in 1986 but is included in 1990 as it is now a health board hospital. St. Mary's hospital was an acute hospital in 1986 but now is long stay.
† Longford County hospital closed on 31 January 1986 and is not included.
