Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - County Kildare Roads Allocation.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

28 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for the Environment if his attention has been drawn to the dangerous conditions of the roads in County Kildare; if he will make a special allocation to Kildare County Council to bring these roads up to a safe standard; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The total 1991 State road grant allocation to Kildare County Council amounts to £19.717 million. This amount represents an increase of 140 per cent over the 1990 allocation of £8.221 million and a 310 per cent increase over the 1989 allocation of £4.807 million.

Of the total of £19.717 million £17.324 million is in respect of national roads, of which £16.640 million is specificially for improvement works on these roads. The remaining £684,000 is for maintenance of national roads throughout the county.

A total of £2.393 million has been allocated in respect of the county's non-national roads. Of this total, £525,000 is in respect of special works and the remaining £1,868,000 represents discretionary grants to supplement the provision made by the local authority, from its own resources, for the maintenance and improvement of regional and county roads. The discretionary grant for 1991 is 271 per cent of the 1989 figure.
I am satisfied therefore that the road grant allocation to Kildare is equitable and will enable Kildare County Council to make considerable improvements to the roads network in the county.
