Vol. 407 No. 9

Written Answers. - Kerry Road Works Funding.

Michael Moynihan

Question:

37 Mr. Moynihan asked the Minister for the Environment if he has any proposals for the provision of a substantial sum of money for major development works on the Ring of Kerry road in view of the importance of this road to local and national tourism interests; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Ring of Kerry comprises both national secondary roads and regional roads.

In 1991, road grants totalling £910,000 have been allocated to Kerry County Council for specific improvements to national secondary roads which form part of the Ring of Kerry. A further £929,000 has been allocated for maintenance of national secondary roads in the county and the extent to which this is used on the roads in question is a matter for determination by the local authority.

Work on the regional roads sections of the route fall to be financed from local authority resources, supplemented by the discretionary grants from my Department. The 1991 grants notified to the local authority under this heading total £3,219,000.

The 1991 Exchequer grants have been fully allocated and there are no further funds available to me from which any additional allocations could be made in the current year. The question of providing additional funding for specific improvement works on the national secondary roads which form part of the Ring of Kerry will be considered when the road grants for 1992 and subsequent years are being determined.
