Vol. 408 No. 1

Written Answers. - Legal Profession Report.

Bernard Allen

Question:

125 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice when he will introduce measures to implement the proposals contained in the report of the legal profession which was published in 1990.

In so far as they relate to my area of responsibility the recommendations of the Fair Trade Commission in regard to solicitors are being considered in connection with the proposed Solicitors (Amendment) Bill, which is at an advanced stage of drafting in my Department.

I recently met representatives of the Bar Council to discuss their observations on the Fair Trade Commission's recommendations regarding barristers. I understand that the council are actively considering proposals for change in the profession of barrister arising from the commission's report.
