Vol. 408 No. 7

Written Answers. - Use of Rapid Deployment Forces.

Madeleine Taylor-Quinn

Question:

52 Mrs. Taylor-Quinn asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he will outline his views on the proposal that the Western European Union be used to oversee the use of rapid deployment forces outside of NATO; and if Ireland plans to participate in such a move.

I am aware of the proposal to which the Deputy refers. The matter is one for the Western European Union itself. Ireland does not participate in the affairs of the Western European Union. The Government do not envisage participation by Ireland in any forces which that organisation might set up.
